Designed for an active sporty lifestyle, the 2012 tiguan delivers excellent performance on the road or over rugged terrain. This engine has been around a long time and it's brilliant, now making 200 horsepower and 207 foot-pounds of torque at a low 1700 rpm. we found acceleration snappy and silky, while the engine is smooth and silent at high speeds, where the chassis is stable. The tiguan se delivers a nice balance between smooth ride quality and stability at high speeds. Volkswagen says tiguan is the gti of compact suvs. tiguan comes standard with front-wheel drive, but we highly recommend opting for the excellent 4motion all-wheel drive. fuel mileage is decent, earning an epa-rated 21/27 mpg city/highway, an increase of 2 mpg over the previous (pre-2012) tiguan, thanks largely to a taller sixth-gear ratio in the 6-speed automatic transmission, and lower-rpm shift points. These things are possible because of the engine's excellent torque, while making the driving dynamic smoother. The interior materials are of a high quality, especially the v-tex leatherette, which we couldn't tell from real leather. We recommend the optional navigation system for its clarity and ease of use. volkswagen says that the tiguan's main rivals are the chevrolet equinox, ford escape, honda cr-v, hyundai santa fe, nissan rogue, subaru forester, and toyota rav4. in addition to about 400 miles on the road, we drove the tiguan at an event in the northwest called mudfest, where it competed in the compact suv class against a honda cr-v, kia sportage, mazda cx-5, mini countryman, nissan juke, and subaru impreza. It also adds silver-metallic interior trim, power adjustable driver seat with memory and power lumbar, climatronic air conditioning, intermittent front windshield wipers with rain sensor, keyless entry with push-button start, power foldable/adjustable/heated exterior mirrors, bi-xenon headlights with low-beam assist, and led daytime running lights. Tiguan sel with premium navigation 34,995) includes an upgraded navigation system with a 6. 5-inch color high-resolution touchscreen display, integrated 30gb hard drive, and voice control. It's a nice size, 174 inches long, 71 inches wide and 66 inches tall, which volkswagen calls the perfect size for city dwelling and country living. We won't be wisecrackers and suggest that if that's true, then every other volkswagen is either too big or too small for city or country living. Then again, maybe we will. the windshield is lightly raked, the beltline creeps up almost imperceptibly. The side windows that appear bigger than they are because of black frames. There's not much shape at the rear, with a thick c-pillar that's nearly vertical; meanwhile, the rear glass tapers a bit toward the roof, where there's a small spoiler, mounted on the glass not the roof, so it doesn't look like the tiguan is trying to be racy. unlike many suvs, even compacts, the tailgate doesn't look big and flat, because it's not. A ridge runs back from the squared-off rear wheel arches, and wraps around the tailgate; imagine rainwater rolling down the rear glass, shooting off that ridge and flying rearward. The teardrop taillights add to the tidy back end, by not being blocky or radical; plus, hooray, they're totally red: no clear, no white, no chrome. the front overhang is short, and there's one clean horizontal swipe that makes up the grille and headlamps, sweeping slightly upward around the corners onto the fenders. Compared to that big dumb grin that the mazda3 has tapered down (but will never live down), the tiguan bears a forced stretched smile. The 14 leds at the corners of the smile are daytime running lights, and look cool. under the bumper there's a honeycombed opening in the fascia, and beneath that a gray panel like a skid plate, with three more openings. Integrated into the new bumper at each side are honeycomb panels housing foglamps. Volkswagen calls it a tough new look for the urban jungle, forgetting that the days of the hummer are over. the tiguan sel features bi-xenon headlamps and 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels that can also be found on the high-performance golf r. interiorwe love the clarity and simplicity of the tiguan se's touch-screen display and controls! Consumer reports doesn't like the touch screen. Consumer reports usually get it right, but in this case we think they got it wrong. Bluetooth is standard. interior trim is soft plastic and faux brushed metal. The doors open wide for easy ingress and egress. There's only fair headroom and legroom for five adults, however. The cargo-carrying options of a 40/20/40 are many. There's a modest 23. 8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat; more if the rear seats are slid forward by their adjustable six inches. cargo space with the seats folded flat is 56. 1 cubic feet, which is a bit light compared to the competition. Gli models are clearly differentiated by a black honeycomb mesh grille with a red surround strip and foglamps integrated into the front bumper. the most striking design element is the aggressive thrust and slope of the car's snout. Compared to some other recent nose-forward designs, however, the composite headlamps and various inlets and grilles are well integrated into the jetta's raked rearward flow. A striking vee, created by the slant of the headlamps and sloping hood lines, is carried strongly toward the rear by the steeply raked windshield and character lines running along the flanks. The rear window is carried deeply into the well-defined c-pillar, accentuating the designers' quest for a coupe-like sweep to the rear quarters. The whole structure appears longer, but the larger taillight clusters, now divided between the trunk and rear fender, help widen the proportion of the car's hindquarters in relation to its height, giving the car a more substantial, less boxy-looking stern. Also helping to integrate the increased bulk of the trunk into the fenders is the coupe-like sweep of the c-pillar and the extensive rear window, which slants deeply into the trunkline. the round tail lights and brake lights will likely be singled out as the new jetta's most derivative statement, giving the car a blander, more asian look to it than previous models. in short, we find the new jetta's look more pleasant than exciting. how well this new design is accepted by the beholder is, however, an entirely different matter from the execution. And the execution is where volkswagen excels. The body panels fit tightly and the paint finish is exquisite. Volkswagen designers accomplish more with less, combining expensive-looking materials with simple but attractive styling and excellent ergonomics. The tamo ash wood trim is indeed trim and not the great expanses of lumber that are sometimes used in a lame attempt to class up an interior. To the contrary, the jetta's wood is tastefully applied to complement the interior's sweeps and angles. Helping to relieve the eye of any monochromatic monotony are such touches as metallic trim around the shift lever, metallic instrument cluster rings; chrome door handles, glovebox lock cylinder and trunk release switch, and the button for the parking brake lever. finding a comfortable driving position is aided by an eight-way power adjustable seat with a power lumbar adjustment, an adjustable steering column and a height-adjustable safety belt. The seven-passenger routan is basically a chrysler town & country with a different interior, a volkswagen exterior, and revised suspension settings. the 2009 volkswagen routan lacks the seating features that make chrysler minivans unique, the stow 'n go and the swivel 'n go seating arrangements. The reason: the routan has the underfloor storage areas that come with stow 'n go, but volkswagen opted to make the second-row seats thicker and more comfortable, so they won't fit in the storage bins. The third-row seats fold into the floor, and the second-row seats can be removed to create a flat load floor that is big enough for 4' x 8' sheets of plywood. When the third-row seats are up, there is a handy well behind them that's great for groceries. the routan is offered with two engines, the chrysler 3. 8-liter v6 and the chrysler 4. 0-liter v6. Handling, however, is somewhat cumbersome. The ride is pleasant enough, ironing out most bumps, but it can feel a bit top heavy at highway speeds. In short, it is not as pleasant to pilot as the honda odyssey, toyota sienna, and nissan quest are. entertainment features will keep the kids' attention, however. Cargo room is comparable. the boxy main body is the same as the town & country's, but the routan has vw styling from the front pillars forward. The grille is unmistakably volkswagen, resembling that of the new tiguan compact suv. The tailgate is also a vw design, with the main element being the vw logo placed dead center. base models have manual sliding doors on both sides while higher line models have power sliding doors. The top-line sel model has a power rear liftgate. On no model does the rear glass open separately. routan comes standard with 16-inch wheels; 17-inch wheels are standard on se and sel. interiorthe routan's greatest advantage over the town & country is the quality of the interior materials. The routan also takes advantage of most of the t&c's thoughtful entertainment features, but lacks the innovative seating options that give the chrysler a considerable advantage in the minivan class. where hard plastic dominates the dash and doors of the town & country, the routan has nicely padded door armrests and a quality soft-touch upper dash. It's not all luxury level, though. The lower dash is hard plastic and the trim piece that bisects the dash is thin plastic. On one model we drove, this piece didn't fit well either. Joybox is also offered in two versions, one with a navigation system and one without. Both include a touchscreen, and both versions have a 30-gigabyte hard drive that holds music and picture files. Those files can be ripped from a cd or downloaded from a thumb drive plugged into the vehicle's usb outlet. When the navigation system is ordered, the hard drive also holds navigation map information. The navigation system has voice activation, and comes with one year of sirius satellite radio. routan's controls are easy to use, though those on the right of the radio or touchscreen can be a bit of a reach for the driver. The climate controls are located below the radio, and they're self explanatory. The gearshift is mounted between the radio and the instrument panel. It's easy to reach, leaves plenty of room for other controls, and includes an electronic gear readout in the instrument cluster. room up front is plentiful. There is plenty of head room, and leg room will only be lacking for the tallest drivers. The front captain's chairs provide an upright driving position with an suv-like view of the road. A tilt steering wheel and available adjustable pedals should help most drivers tailor a comfortable seating position, but some might prefer a telescoping steering wheel to bring the wheel closer to the driver. when it comes to storage, the routan has two glove boxes and some cubbies in the center stack for small items storage.
