2007 jeep compass review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover with big-suv virtues. introductionthe 2007 jeep compass is all new, a term usually meaning that a vehicle has been completely redesigned. But in the case of the compass, it's a completely new vehicle: first generation.  one way to measure the value of the compass might be to compare it to the trusty jeep cherokee that was enormously popular for 18 years and finally ended its run in 2001. The compass is slightly bigger and light years better than the cherokee was 10 years ago. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. The cvt is optional with the compass sport model, and standard on the limited, where autostick can be added to the cvt. Autostick enables the driver to shift up and down over six steps, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal. The combination of cvt with six-speed autostick is the best of both worlds, and works more precisely than the manual/automatic transmissions in many expensive sports sedans.  the safety, ride and handling of the compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Although, in order to keep the advertised msrp down, air conditioning and power windows and locks are optional.  the styling is similar but sleeker than jeep's other small suv, the liberty, which uses a six-cylinder engine. There's good interior space all around, with rear seats that fold flat to make about 54 cubic feet of cargo space. Options for added versatility include reclining rear seats and a passenger front seat that also folds flat, creating either a table or eight-foot-long space for storage. lineupthe jeep compass lineup comes as two models, sport 15,425) and limited 19,580). It comes standard with a five speed manual or a cvt automatic 1000).  the sport model comes standard with an am/fm/cd player with auxiliary audio input jack. The front and rear fascia and side moldings have shiny aluminum accents.  options for the limited include the sport options, plus a six-speed autostick mode with the continuously variable transaxle 1150), a navigation system, hands-free bluetooth communication, chrome-plated 18-inch aluminum wheels 825) and the boston acoustics sound system 460).  safety features that come standard on all models include anti-lock brakes with brake assist (which applies more brake force than the driver is applying if sensors determine it's needed in a panic stop), electronic stability control (esp) with electronic roll mitigation (erm), and side-curtain air bags for head protection. Also standard are state-of-the-art seatbelts in all five positions, so be sure to wear them. Safety options include side airbags for the front seats 250) for torso protection in a side impact. A tire pressure monitoring system is available as part of a package. walkaroundmany won't be able to tell the compass from a liberty because the styling is so similar, especially in front with the classic jeep grille having seven vertical slots, but the differences are clear. The compass looks more like a crossover suv, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels, as opposed to the plastic cladding on most liberty models. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the c-pillars to preserve the character line.  the liftgate on the compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle while the liberty's is vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle (leaving more sheetmetal and reducing visibility) while the liberty's window is, again, squared.  that slope at the rear of the compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's six inches lower than the liberty's. Black plastic roofrails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.  the compass is one inch closer to the ground than the liberty. The more car-like styling and relative sleekness make the compass look longer than the liberty, but it's actually one inch shorter.  the compass limited has aluminum-looking trim on the sides and bumpers. The less-costly sport looks classier in its cleaner monotone. The optional 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels on the limited will appeal to those who want their jeep suv to look more like a cadillac escalade. interiorthe jeep compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The center stack is wide and intelligent: rectangular vents on top, over the one-disc am/fm/cd, over a slot that might hold a paperback book. Below that are three climate control knobs, some buttons and then the shift lever at the driver's right knee. Both the automatic and manual transaxle levers are mounted in this practical high forward position, introduced by honda after being copied from rally racing cars, where ergonomics matter.  moving rearward between the front seats, there are two fixed cupholders, the emergency brake handle, and a flip-up center console containing a slot for a cellphone or mp3 player. The console top is an armrest, and can be slid three inches to accommodate drivers of different sizes.  legroom is good, both front and rear: 39. 4 inches in the rear. The compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats, optional on sport and standard on limited. There are cupholders in the rear but no net pockets on the front seatbacks, which would be nice. Grab handles make it easy to climb out.  the rear 60/40 seats fold flat with the touch of a finger on each side, as easy as it gets. The front seat on the limited model folds flat, making a table. The rear cargo area, a decent 53. 6 cubic feeet with the rear seats folded, is covered by a rugged vinyl mat that's removable for washing. The space-saver spare tire is neatly stored under the mat. One innovative feature on the limited is the removable rechargable led flashlight mounted in the headliner above the cargo area.  the one-piece liftgate has panels for structural integrity, and the rear bumper has a non-skid rubber surface for stepping onto. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter world engine is the right powerplant for the jeep compass. It uses the latest technology, including.

2005 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Day in and day out, it takes the place of a car or wagon. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. In this respect, it stands apart from the herd of compact sport-utility vehicles, few of which offer true off-road capability. The liberty gives up some refinement and road agility to do this. On the road, it does not ride or handle as well as some of the other small suvs. But the liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need practicality and affordability during the week.  for 2005, the liberty gets a new engine and two new transmissions. With the addition of an advanced, 2. 7-liter common-rail diesel engine, jeep becomes the first midsize suv available with a diesel engine in the u. The diesel is backed by a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A new, six-speed manual transmission replaces the previous five-speed manual.  the liberty renegade has seen the most change for 2005, having been fitted with a flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards. All receive a new front fascia, grille, foglamps fender flares, and body side-moldings. Interior refinements include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics, and improved seat comfort. lineupthe 2005 jeep liberty is available in three trim levels: sport, limited edition, and renegade. The new diesel engine is available on both sport and limited models. A five-speed automatic is standard on the diesel.  sport 19,190) and sport 4wd 20,700) are entry-level models, but receive visual changes for 2005 that add the look of custom details. Air conditioning 850) is optional, however. Power windows and other features can be added as options. The optional v6 is available with manual transmission 850) or an automatic 1,675). The common rail diesel, or crd, is available for the sport 4x4 24,515).  limited edition models offer upgraded interior amenties and a better grade of cloth upholstery. Limited 23,525) and limited 4wd 25,035) come standard with the v6 engine and automatic transmission. Air conditioning is standard. Other options include the trailer tow group 285), a trac-loc locking rear differential 285), power sunroof 700) and sirius satellite digital radio 195). While the tire pressure monitor and simple warning signal are standard, a roof-mounted tire pressure display, which shows the actual pressure at each wheel, is optional 75).  renegade 2wd 22,910) and 4wd 24,520) models come standard with the 3. 7-liter v6, six-speed manual transmission and command-trac part-time 4wd system. Renegade comes standard with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; 16-inch graphite-painted aluminum wheels; power windows, mirrors, and locks; illuminated keyless entry; side rails; and many other features. Renegade 4wd models include rugged tubular side rails and rock rails. Automatic transmission 825) is optional. A premium package 1,240) adds the automatic, power leather seats, and upgraded door trim panels, along with an overhead vehicle information center that allows the customer to program automatic locking, lighting, and other features.  side-impact airbags 490) are optional on all liberty models, and we highly recommend them. Serious 4wd adventurers may want the optional off-road group 765 for sport, $520 for limited), which includes skid plates for the front suspension, fuel tank and transfer case; a locking rear differential; heavy-duty engine cooling; p235/70r16 all-terrain tires; and tow hooks. walkaroundwith its seven-slat grille and round headlights, there's no question the liberty looks like a jeep.  the liberty's body is tall, providing the driver with a commanding view of the terrain ahead. In terms of exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length of 174. 4 inches, the jeep liberty is slightly longer than the ford escape. It's longer than the wrangler, but significantly shorter and lighter than the grand cherokee.  2005 liberty sport models get a new body-color grille, provisions for optional fog lamps, and higher turn lamp locations for more protection from road debris. A flatter hood complements the traditional round jeep headlimps for a distinctive jeep appearance. A new body-color grille is part of the re-styling for 2005, as are large freestanding fog lamps with black bezels, and a new sill to protect the body sides from road blast. Tow hooks and a bright silver metallic applique across the new molded-in color front fascia are standard features. Bolted flares are also molded-in color for more durability and have chrome-plated attachment details. A new luggage side rack with beefieer molded-in color end pieces, and a brushed silver metallic tubular side rail combine to suggest a rugged appearance. The black off-road light bar, standard in prior years, is now an optional feature. Fender flares, combined with the off-road light bar and taillamp guards give the renegade a look that stands apart from the sport and limited models.  a neat feature on all models: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport.  the jeep liberty debuted as a 2002 model. 2003 brought enhancements aimed at improving on-road stability. 2004 brought upgrades in safety equipment, and in comfort and convenience options. Among them: chrysler's enhanced accident response system, which unlocks doors and turns on interior lights five seconds after an airbag deploys. interiorthe jeep liberty comes with a roomy interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo, with 29 cubic feet of usable space behind the second row of seats. Sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with 40. 7 inches of headroom, best in class, according to jeep. Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests, and a grab handle is provided on the passenger's side of the dash. Sport seats we tried in '04 felt firm in the middle, but the side bolsters were too mushy to provide much side support. For '05, they have been noticeably improved through the use of dual-density foam. Also, there's no seat-height adjustment. The side bolsters are still soft, a signal that the liberty is set up more to absorb vibration than sling around corners. The cloth upholstery, with a diamond-plate inspired fabric, feels like it'll hold up well. The renegade front seats are tailored with unique cloth center panels and vinyl bolsters. The front seats in the limited are more comfortable. The grab handle, located on the a-pillar above the steering wheel, is not in the perfect position to help shorter people swing inside.  the liberty's rear seats are comfortable, capable of holding three people. Two adults should be happy here. Cloth Interior✔ AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Player✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

2002 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Limited model comes with v6 engine. introductionjeep's new liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekends, but want refinement, practicality, and affordability during the week.  jeep liberty is smooth, quiet, and responsive on the road. Turn off the pavement, and it'll go just about anywhere. It'll carry five people and their gear. Air conditioning 850) is an option, but a six-speaker stereo is standard.  limited edition 2wd models 21,260) come standard with the v6 engine and automatic transmission. Its seven-slat grille and round headlights are dead giveaways. The design was inspired by two radically different jeep concept vehicles: the utilitarian dakar, which looked like it was ready for a safari with an upright stance, short overhangs, and trapezoidal fenders, and the sporty jeepster, which looked like it was ready for a race across the sahara. Limited models are distinguished with body-colored trim and aluminum wheels, which create a more sophisticated appearance.  liberty's body is tall, providing the driver a commanding view of the terrain ahead. By exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length off 174. 4 inches, it's slightly longer than ford's escape. It's longer than jeep's classic wrangler as well, but 7 inches shorter and as much as 500 pounds lighter than the grand cherokee.  a neat feature: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport. interiorliberty comes with a terrific interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo.  sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with acres of headroom (best in class, according to jeep) and general roominess. The overall sense of refinement and comfort feels more passenger sedan than truck. Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests.  the rear seats are comfortable, capable of holding three people. Two adults should be happy here. Two big garbage cans fit side by side back there that had to go front to rear in a boxy old isuzu trooper. Dropping the split rear seat is a one-hand operation in the liberty; the rear seat bottom stays in place. The cargo floor isn't perfectly flat when the rear seats are folded down, however, and that's my biggest gripe with this vehicle. Nor are the rear seats readily removable as they are in the rav4. Also, the rear head rests are hard to remove and install with two buttons needed to release them.  overall, the interior presents a round motif that looks contemporary with round door handles, round instruments, round air inlets, a round horn pad. Textures and finishes are nicely done. Big gauges use black-on-beige graphics. The limited adds attractive satin chrome highlights to the instrument panel and doors. The shifter is on the tall side, but works well. Limited comes with a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel.  liberty is loaded with safety features: multi-stage front airbags deploy with less force during low speed collisions, or if the occupant is unbuckled, to reduce the risk of airbag-related injuries. Liberty is the first jeep to offer optional side curtains to protect outboard occupants from head injury in side impacts. A three-point belt for the center rear seat is standard, a safety feature that's missing from most suvs. Jacking equipment is stored under the rear seat and can be quickly grabbed as a unit. driving impressionfully capable of tackling the rubicon trail, the mother of all unpaved roads, the jeep liberty also feels quite competent rounding a high-speed sweeping turn on a wet road. Winding roads are an enjoyable experience and tooling around town and in heavy traffic is smooth and comfortable.  let's start with off-road capability: i drove a liberty v6 automatic down an off-road trail used at the annual camp jeep event near lovingston, virginia. A jeep engineer and i followed a modified wrangler driven by an off-road club member. A ford escape or a toyota rav4 would not have made it, but the liberty crossed steep ditches and gullies, where its short front and rear overhangs paid off. It wove through stands of tightly spaced trees, where its tight turning radius was a benefit. With eight inches of suspension travel, it clambered over big rocks and fallen trees. It slowly forded boulder-strewn creeks with 18 inches of rushing water. (jeep says it can handle 20 inches at 10 mph, good for flooded underpasses.) its traction up steep, muddy banks was truly impressive, with no wheelspin.  most people will order the liberty with the 3. 7-liter v6 and automatic. The v6 is also available with a heavy-duty five-speed manual. (the liberty's v6 is essentially the grand cherokee's 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 with two cylinders lopped off. A counter-rotating balance shaft was added to reduce vibration.) it's smooth and powerful, rated at 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. And it works well with the automatic. Liberty's v6 is standard on the limited edition, optional on sport models. Jeep's v6 tops the small sport-ute class and allows an impressive 5000-pound towing capacity. Shift from 2wd to 4wd on the fly with a slight pull on the hand lever. When the trail is looking really ugly, slow to 2-3 mpg and while still coasting, shift into neutral, and pull the lever up higher for low range. Jeep calls it 'uni-frame' because it's a beefed up unibody with frame-like reinforcement rails. This gives it increased strength and rigidity.
