This is what the auto industry calls a mid-cycle revision, and the improvements are as extensive as any undertaken so far. Horsepower and torque increase, thanks to a new dual-exhaust system. This so-called luxury suv remains one of the best values in the class. lineupthe mdx is an acura, so it follows the brand's all-inclusive price strategy, with limited options. It's offered in a single trim level, powered by a 3. 5-liter, 265-hp v6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. mdx 36,400) comes standard with a long list of luxury and convenience features, including many that are extra-cost options on its competitors: leather seating surfaces and leather door inserts; keyless remote entry; power windows, door locks and mirrors; power tilt-and-slide moonroof; cruise control; seven-speaker am/fm/cassette stereo with in-dash cd player; power adjustable front seats; alloy wheels and a multi-function digital trip computer. Others claim it makes the mdx seem more like a minivan than a big suv. what isn't obvious except in a body-off view is the duality of construction under the mdx. It is both unibody and body on frame. This centaur-like approach gives uncommon rigidity and strength gained from longitudinal rails with eight box-section cross members. This is the thinking engineers' path to making a car/truck both a car and a truck, whichever is appropriate to the occasion. The effect is noise, vibration and harshness control on par with a car, and the load-and stress-management characteristics of a truck. The finish inside is excellent, with new titanium-look trim for 2004. The materials are generally high grade, and the fit and matching of various panels is first-rate. airy, perforated leather adorns the seats, side panels, steering wheel and shift knob. There is nothing swoopy or eye-popping about the instrument panel, just easily read instruments with an unobstructed view. Simple, large knobs are easy to operate whether that hand is wearing mittens or has long fingernails. The overall sense is the serenity of simplicity. the air bag fits flat into the passenger-side dash. Sun visors have extensions for those sharp shafts of sun angling low at dawn and dusk. The back-up video camera with the navigation system is at least as useful as the more common, beep-beep-beep systems that warn of hard-to-see obstacles with electronic sound or readout. Bottom line, this reverse-view camera is a good thing, but it takes some getting used to: first, to get comfortable with the extreme fish-eye view, and second, to trust it. The wide panoramic images on the display screen tend to distort depth. A convenient walk-in feature slides the mdx's entire second seat forward with the touch of a lever, located on the curb side. This slider has been improved for 2004 by extending forward travel 40 percent, making entry to the third row even simpler. When not in use, both the second and third rows fold to disappear completely into the floor, leaving a flat surface with no protrusions to scratch luggage or inhibit cargo loading. The seats split for a varied mix of people and stuff. with the second and third seats stowed, there's room for a ton of stuff. With 81. 5 cubic feet of cargo space, the mdx dwarves five-passenger competitors such as the bmw x5 (54. 4 cubic feet) and infiniti fx (64. 5). It beats all but the volvo xc90 (84. 9 cubic feet) among seven-passenger competitors. Mdx also delivers 4,500 pounds of boat-towing capacity. the split air-conditioning system is one of the more impressive features. Not only can those in back have a different temperature than the front-seat riders, but one zone can get heat while another gets air conditioning. Every seat in the house has a shoulder harness as well as a lap belt. (many suvs do not come with a shoulder belt in the rear center position.) anchors for child seats are everywhere. Lots of cup holders, too. we like the navigation system for its intuitive simplicity. Indeed, this may be the best gps-guided system going. A novel capability, and one uniquely appropriate for a vehicle equipped to seek out uncharted outbacks, is a feature that leaves electronic bread crumbs on screen. Its highway manners are excellent. A five-speed automatic transmission features gear ratios spaced to match suv requirements. mdx can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 9 seconds, a full second faster than the nearest competitor. A mesa-shaped torque curve means responsive acceleration for merging and passing at any speed. the brakes are absolute standouts, responsive and secure. acura says that mdx can tow a 4500-boat, or a 3500-pound trailer with a tongue weight of 450 pounds. That kind of towing capability is normally considered truck trait. off road, mdx makes up for the absence of a transfer case and a granny gear with a regular low gear that is extra low. Most of the time, the mdx runs in front-wheel-drive mode for good fuel economy. Some all-wheel-drive systems normally cruise in front-wheel drive, engaging the rear wheels when sensors detect front wheel spin. Slippage, the acura engineers reason, can only occur under acceleration. And so the mdx engages the rear wheels as well as the front wheels whenever the driver calls for acceleration, without waiting for slippage to occur. Two safety points: acura expects a five-star federal crash rating (the best) on the mdx. And acura claims the mdx can be hit from behind by a vehicle going 35 mph without the third row of seats being breached. As for 'greenness,' all mdx models sold nationwide meet strict ulev-2 emissions standards. . summaryacura mdx combines most of the virtues of the suv genre and diminishes or eliminates most of its vices.

Perhaps it's the spirit of soichiro honda in this all-new acura 3. 2 tl. Honda died in 1992, but officials from american honda's acura division say the tl embodies his philosophies of performance, styling, luxury and value. He strived for perfection in all his cars and many of them were significant mileposts in the history of the automobile. we found some of this spirit in british columbia's cascade mountains high above chateau whistler. Its lines are more modern and more refined and its stance is more athletic. Acura's tl fits in the so-called near luxury segment of cars in the $30,000 range and it has an upscale look in keeping with this. There's a rear spoiler available that the dealers sell as an accessory, but it doesn't improve the clean lines. The new tl was designed, engineered and manufactured in the u. S. acura's tl is available as one fully loaded model with a powerful new 3. 2-liter v6. Called the 3. 2 tl, it is priced at just $28,385; that's considerably less than the '98 tl and less than many of the tl's current competitors. (retail prices include $435 destination charge.) the only option available is acura's competent navigation system, which brings the price to $30,385. (the previous-generation tl came as two models with a choice of engines.) at the core of the new tl is a compact, newly designed 3. 2-liter 225-horsepower vtec v6 with more power than the other cars in its class. interiorthe 1999 3. 2 tl is roomier than its predecessor and it's roomier than the lexus es 300 and bmw 3 series. Part of that roominess came from mounting the v6 engine sideways -- or transversely. Also, we've seen better wood trim. The shifter is trimmed in brushed aluminum that lends a sporty appearance. the back seats are roomy. The center position features a three-point shoulder belt, instead of just a lap belt. The rear seats don't fold down, but a small center section opens to allow skis, fly rods and other long objects in the trunk to pass through the seats. the tl comes with a high level of standard equipment, much more so than the bmw 323i: leather seating, heated front seats, power driver's and passenger's seats, wood-grained trim, automatic climate control, tilt steering column, cruise control, bose am/fm/cd/cassette with steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power moonroof, power heated door mirrors, keyless entry, theft-deterrent system, auto-off headlights, and the homelink universal transceiver system. Active safety features include abs, traction control, and high-intensity discharge headlights. Passive safety features include dual front airbags and side-impact door beams. at $2,000, the navigation system is an expensive option. A brightly lit touch-screen monitor displays a map or alpine-type route instructions. It works well and can provide a lot of help in unfamiliar territory. Like all these systems, however, it's about 95 percent there in terms of development. Try the system out before deciding whether to order it. driving impressionacura's tl strikes an excellent balance on many levels. It's very quiet underway -- even the mirror control is whisper quiet -- yet it doesn't make the driver feel totally isolated from what's going on outside. It dampens bumps and vibration, yet the handling is taut and it doesn't make the driver feel disconnected from the pavement. one of the best features of the tl is that it is very stable at high speeds. This is an easy car to drive fast. Like most front-drive cars, it understeers -- the front tires slide before the rear tires -- when driven past its cornering limits. This makes for easy, predictable handling. the tl doesn't have the hard, precise edge of a bmw. The chassis roll center was lowered to reduce body lean in corners. Anti-lock brakes are standard. then there's that engine. The vtec system provides a remarkable combination of performance and fuel economy. It delivers strong acceleration at highway speeds and sharp throttle response at lower speeds. Acura claims the tl is quicker than a mercedes-benz c280 or bmw 528i. The company says the tl can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7. 7 seconds. At the same time, the tl's engine is supremely smooth and quiet. the tl comes standard with a sequential sportshift 4-speed automatic. Normally, it works like any other automatic. Shifting is smooth and refined. It downshifts into the appropriate gear when quick acceleration is needed, though not always as quickly as we'd like. And it doesn't hunt unnecessarily between gears. Slide the shifter into a two-way gate on the left; downshift by pulling the lever back, upshift by pushing it forward. I had fun with it in the mountains of british columbia. The sportshift can also add a little entertainment when slogging along in stop-and-go traffic. Its suspension strikes a good balance between handling and a luxurious, well-controlled ride. we think mr.
